President Joe Biden has included cellists from the moment he was elected. Although there were none at the noon ceremony, Yo-Yo Ma helped celebrate that evening through these words and a performance of “Amazing Grace.”


She Bribed Her Neighbors with Chocolate for Her Daughter’s Cello Exam

Myleene Klass wanted to make sure her neighbors were quiet during her 13-year-old daughter Ava’s grade seven cello exam earlier this month, so she bribed them with chocolate.

R.I.P. Winifred Mayes, Age 101, Boston Symphony Orchestra’s First Woman String Player

Cellist Winifred Mayes was the first woman to successfully audition for a position in the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s string section. At her audition in 1957, she beat 14 men to earn the position.


R.I.P. Cellist David W. Guggenheim, Age 91

Cellos in the News: Top Stories of the Week - 23 January

Cellist and teacher David Guggenheim was known for his “attractive and vibrant sound” and served as principal cellist of the Pennsylvania Ballet Orchestra until his retirement in 2000.
