Halloween is creeping closer. Here are five ideas to help you (and your cello) celebrate. Be sure to read to the end to download the 2024 free coloring and activity pages.
1. Treats! Time for You (and Your Cello) to Play Dress-Up
Ever thought about playing your cello in costume? Here are some fantastic costume and mask ideas from videos we love:
“Havana” by Camila Cabello Featuring Young Thug – Cover Arranged and Performed by the Brooklyn Duo and Friends
A mask can transform the mood—watch and choose your favorite!
Pirates Of The Caribbean by Hans Zimmer – Cover by 2CELLOS
The 2CELLOS use impressive cinematography and wonderful costumes in their Pirates of the Caribbean cover.
Theme from Dune by Hans Zimmer – Tina Guo Performs Her Own Version Here
Tina Guo played electric cello on the soundtracks of both Dune 1 and 2. Here she performs her own version in innovative costumes.
“Cello Wars (Star Wars Parody) Lightsaber Duel” — The Piano Guys
Steven Sharp Nelson, cellist for The Piano Guys, channels his inner Jedi in this Star Wars mashup, complete with a lightsaber duel. And don’t miss the mind trick in the closing credits—it really works!)
Fun fact: I once had to cover a sequined choir costume with a black shirt during a cello solo to protect my instrument. Sadly, there was no covering to protect me from those sequins!
Small-Dog Hats = Festive Cello Accessories!
Want to dress up your cello this Halloween? Small dog or cat hats can work wonders. Adding a fun accessory, like this pirate hat, can make practice sessions even more festive.

This pirate hat fits a 4/4 cello scroll.
When attaching costumes to the cello, remember that animal hats aren’t designed for cello scrolls, so you may need to get creative! Share your cello’s Halloween look with us—email photos or tag us on social media (Facebook or Instagram).
Just be sure your costume is scratch-free and doesn’t interfere with your playing. Also, be mindful of any noisy accessories that could disrupt a rehearsal (speaking from experience—I was that kid in the cello section!).
Also, make sure that the costume doesn’t get in the way of playing or tuning. Additionally, be sure not to get in trouble with your conductor or other musicians for disruptive costume accessories, such as bells. (Yes, I’m writing from experience. I was that kid in the cello section.)
