NSO: Masterworks 1 – You Had Me at “Cello” with Stéphane Tétreault
The Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Marc David kicks off the 2021-22 season by welcoming back cellist Stéphane Tétreault for an evening of delightful classical music. The concert features Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor Op.85 and Brahms Symphony No. 4, Op. 90.
Don’t miss this world class performance from YOUR NSO together with special guest Stéphane Tétreault.

Arkansas Symphony – Gabriel Martins, Cello
Guest conductor Stephen Mulligan concludes the full-length program with Igor Stravinsky’s 1919 version of “The Firebird” Suite. Cellist Gabriel Martins solos in Robert Schumann’s “Cello Concerto” in a minor. The program also includes “The Chairman Dances: Foxtrot for Orchestra” by John Adams, Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin.”
Martins, 23, has won prizes in the David Popper International Cello Competition, Prague Spring International Music Competition, Sphinx Competition and International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians.

Comprehensive Orchestral Audition Preparation
Designed to dramatically advance the skills you need to play your best under pressure in the unpredictable world of orchestral auditions. COAP is the only audition preparation intensive that combines continuous one-on-one feedback at the highest level with an energizing studio dynamic in one course.
Auditions require technical competency, instrumental athleticism, ability to sound beautiful and effortless under intense pressure, laser focus, calm mind, and preparation for unexpected hurdles. COAP will give you the experiential training needed to succeed at your audition while working with your existing schedule.
Our unique program offers the highest level of one-on-one personal feedback from musicians who have successfully navigated the audition process in front of and behind the screen. We fully utilize a highly energized studio-like environment providing feedback through numerous peer trials that will illustrate your current and potential capabilities. In this hands-on session, Natalie will help you develop you accompaniment tool kit, on your way to becoming your ensemble’s MVP!

What is a cello class?
This is a meeting that a group of cello students have together with their teacher, where in a masterclass-type setting some of the students have the opportunity to present music they have been working on. Unlike a real masterclass, it is not necessary to play a full piece! Half of a piece or just a couple of lines is plenty.
You will then get feedback primarily from your peers, moderated by the teacher, with a few suggestions from the teacher as well.
This format is not a replacement for private lessons, but can provide invaluable support, encouragement, and input from other cellists, allowing for more growth and advancement in the cello.
All musical styles welcome, the only requirement is that you play the cello!Pricing is 5€ for anyone who wants to watch only, and 15€ for those who want to perform (limited to 3 per event). Please choose a piece or part of a piece no longer than 5 minutes.

Cello Yoga Livestream Workshop
Back By Popular Demand! CelloYoga Livestream Workshop!
In this workshop Mea the Creative Cellist will help cellists discover ways to reduce tension in their playing so that they can play with more flexibility, freedom and focus without increasing practice time.
This is an interactive experience and participants are encouraged to bring their cellos.
We will explore the following topics:
-How To Develop a More Relaxed Vibrato so that you can play with more expression
-How to Get Your Left Hand to Cooperate even if you have small hands, oddly shaped fingers, arthritis or other limitations
-How To Tame Your Bow so that you can play faster, especially while crossing strings.
Bonus Topic: Using Your Bow For Creative Expression.
There will be a Q and A at the end of the session. Participants are encouraged to submit their questions beforehand on the facebook event page so that they can be guaranteed a response!
Please bring your cello and an open mind! Be ready to have fun!

Audition Preparation Workshop
CelloBello is thrilled to announce the return of the Audition Preparation Workshop (Nov. 1st to Nov. 14th)!
Drawing on their vast experiences as soloists, chamber musicians, and world-renowned teachers, this two-week intensive features master classes, private lessons, and panel discussions centered around helping young students prepare for their upcoming undergraduate auditions. Our workshop faculty include:

Fiddle Hell Online

To keep us safe, we reimagined Fiddle Hell as an online festival and music camp in November, 2020. It was an exciting new way for our music community to reconnect during the pandemic. 35 concerts, 35 jams and 165 workshops were all live, with video replays for the next 3 months. Although we missed seeing our musical friends face-to-face, and jamming with them in the hallways, we had front-row seats for every virtual session, and were joined by new attendees and instructors from around the world!
We had such a good time that we ran a second Fiddle Hell Online on April 15-18, 2021!
And now Fiddle Hell Online is happening for the third time on November 4-7, 2021! We have many new instructors and almost all new sessions. The November FHO will have 175 live workshops to learn from, 35 live concerts to enjoy, and 35 live jam sessions to join on Zoom, for fiddle, mandolin, cello, guitar, old-time banjo, & singing. Other instruments and listeners are welcome, too. All sessions can be replayed (and slowed down) for the next FOUR months (until March 8, 2022). Fiddle Hell instructors — experienced & supportive teachers, and wonderful & inspiring players — will cover Bluegrass, Blues, Cajun, Cape Breton, East European, Electric, Irish, Jazz, Jazz Manouche, Klezmer, Latin, Mexican, New Acoustic, New England, Old-Time Southern, Québécois, Scottish, Swedish, and Swing styles.
Registration is $144 for adults, $130 for seniors (65+), and students (up to 25) with discounts for additional family members.

Online International Clara Schumann Competition
The International Clara Schumann Competition 2021 is an online music competition which aims to fully challenge the virtuosity and artistic excellence of performers for piano, strings, voice and chamber music of all nationalities and countries.
Through this online music competition, we hope to provide an opportunity for developing musicians worldwide to perform in a formal, challenging yet supportive atmosphere. The goal is to provide young musicians a forum to challenge themselves musically, and to share their music. Winners also have the opportunity to be featured in our online concert, and social media.

International Instrument-making Competition (Cello)

Musée de la musique/Philharmonie de Paris and Talents & Violon’celles
From 19 to 23 January 2022 at the Philharmonie de Paris
In January 2022, in partnership with the association Talents & Violon’celles, the Musée de la musique/ Philharmonie de Paris is organising an international instrument-making competition exclusively dedicated to the cello. Programmed at the same time as the 10th String Quartet Biennial, this event follows in the tradition of the many international instrument-making competitions that Paris has hosted.
Promoting contemporary excellence and developing future talents
Open to professionals as well as to students of instrument-making schools, the Talent Makers Instrument-making Competition is composed of two different parts organised in parallel:
Jury and Prizes
A jury composed of eminent musicians and personalities from the world of instrument-making will judge the craftsmanship of the participants as expressed by the instruments themselves and how they sound. Six prizes will be awarded to professionals, and three prizes will be awarded to students with one instrument joining the collection of facsimiles at the Musée de la musique. The finals and semi-finals will be organised as a real rendezvous with the public of the 10th String Quartet Biennial.

Queen Elisabeth Competition (Cello)
Five years after the huge success of the very first Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition, we will hold a new session for cellists. The second cello competition will take place from 9 May to 4 June 2022. This session was originally planned for May 2021, but is postponed for a year due to the postponement of the piano competition.
Cellists interested in participating, can now consult the requested repertoire, the entry conditions and read more information about the competition rounds in the rules of the 2022 cello session.

Application deadline : Wednesday 8 December 2021 12:00 (noon) GMT
Age limit : In order not to disadvantage the young musicians preparing for this second edition, the age limit for candidates is raised by one year. Hence, candidates are aged at least 18 and have not yet reached the age of 31 (instead of 30) on 31 December 2021 (i.e. they must be born after 31 December 1990 and before 1 January 2004).The applications will be done entirely online, through the ‘APPLY’ section of our website.

The Junior Cello Camerata
The Junior Cello Camerata offers intermediate cellists of all ages (including adult amateurs) masterclass lessons, or the opportunity to observe rather than perform solos, as well as a twenty-minute weekly technique class for all with cellos in hand. It is an online, international weekly gather taught by Wendy Warner, Jonathan Kramer, and Lisa Liske.

Let Natalie Haas teach you some tricks of the trade as well as some great melodies!
Natalie is one of the most sought after cellists playing traditional music today. She and Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser have toured as a duo for twenty years, wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound.
In this series she will teach some bowing techniques when accompanying melody players before moving on to chords and arranging, finishing with some melodies that sit well on the cello.
Although this series is aimed at the cellist, many of the skills and techniques will sit as comfortably on any string instrument.

Alisa Weilerstein cello – Bach and Osvaldo Golijov
The American cellist has been the recipient of awards including the Leonard Bernstein Prize at the 2006 Schleswig-Holstein Festival, and five years later a MacArthur Foundation ‘genius grant’. Her diverse repertoire takes in contemporary works she has premiered, alongside the classics: Gramophone discerned ‘special qualities’ in her recording of the Bach Cello Suites, allowing ‘each movement of each suite to shine on its own terms’.

DWB (Driving While Black)
Driving While Black
Dwb is the premiere filmed version of the opera by the same name Susan Kander and Roberta Gumbel. Presented by UrbanArias, now celebrating its 10th anniversary. UrbanArias is an opera company dedicated to producing short – 90 minutes or less – contemporary operas.
A solo chamber opera, dwb derives much of its power from the voice of soprano Karen Slack, starring as the various mothers. Slack, who has sung with the Metropolitan Opera and Washington National Opera, among other prestigious opera houses, moves easily from lyric to dramatic sounds and offers theatrical skills to boot.
A two-musician ensemble – composed of cellist Rosanna Butterfield and percussionist Eric Plewinski – is conducted by Robert Wood. Known as an innovator in opera, Wood founded UrbanArias in 2009.
Du’Bois A’keen directed and choreographed the film; Camry A’Keen was the creative director. Both have drawn on their extensive operatic, choreographic, and film backgrounds to bring elements of modern dance and music video production.
Tickets are $15 and allow unlimited viewing through October 31.
