Seth Parker Woods, cello & Andrew Rosenblum, piano, play Mendelssohn, Schumann, and more
One of the most exciting musicians of his generation and a multidisciplinary artist as natural in the worlds of avant-garde and pop music as he is in core classical repertoire, cellist Seth Parker Woods makes his 92Y debut with award-winning pianist Andrew Rosenblum. Their gorgeous program juxtaposes works by core European composers with African American composers including the groundbreaking Pulitzer Prize winner George Walker, and features a melodic, stunningly beautiful Mendelssohn sonata, Walker’s lovely, enigmatic Cello Sonata, and a trio of rhapsodic short works by Schumann. Expect additional selections by the marvelous turn-of-the-century composer Florence Price and a jazz-inflected work by Coleridge Taylor Perkinson, for a concert as deep and expansive as the artists performing it.
Concert also available via livestream and available for 72 hours from time of broadcast.

Beethoven, Britten and Piazzolla – Mischa Maisky cello; Lily Maisky piano
The leading cellist joins with his pianist daughter – a regular recital partner – for a programme centred on a major work written for Rostropovich. ‘They made music with deeply felt intimacy, in full agreement’, wrote Die Welt of the duo, ‘and with the ideal magic of sound carried by common breathing’; while the Süddeutsche Zeitung suggested that ‘one couldn’t imagine a more homogenous duo. They inspired each other, and even more often they agreed with each other unspoken’.

Live at Timucua: Nick Photinos
Four-time Grammy Award-winner Nick Photinos is one of the most innovative cellists of our time, collaborating with artists including Björk, Wilco, Bryce Dessner, and Philip Glass.
Join him as he performs Petits Artéfacts–a collection of recent short works running the gamut from intimate to silly to profound–for cello and electronics by Florida composers Alex Burtzos and Mark Snyder as well as Nathalie Joachim, Leanna Primiani, Ted Hearne, Monty Adkins, Susanna Hancock, and Florent Ghys.

Audition Preparation Workshop
CelloBello is thrilled to announce the return of the Audition Preparation Workshop (Nov. 1st to Nov. 14th)!
Drawing on their vast experiences as soloists, chamber musicians, and world-renowned teachers, this two-week intensive features master classes, private lessons, and panel discussions centered around helping young students prepare for their upcoming undergraduate auditions. Our workshop faculty include:

Fiddle Hell Online

To keep us safe, we reimagined Fiddle Hell as an online festival and music camp in November, 2020. It was an exciting new way for our music community to reconnect during the pandemic. 35 concerts, 35 jams and 165 workshops were all live, with video replays for the next 3 months. Although we missed seeing our musical friends face-to-face, and jamming with them in the hallways, we had front-row seats for every virtual session, and were joined by new attendees and instructors from around the world!
We had such a good time that we ran a second Fiddle Hell Online on April 15-18, 2021!
And now Fiddle Hell Online is happening for the third time on November 4-7, 2021! We have many new instructors and almost all new sessions. The November FHO will have 175 live workshops to learn from, 35 live concerts to enjoy, and 35 live jam sessions to join on Zoom, for fiddle, mandolin, cello, guitar, old-time banjo, & singing. Other instruments and listeners are welcome, too. All sessions can be replayed (and slowed down) for the next FOUR months (until March 8, 2022). Fiddle Hell instructors — experienced & supportive teachers, and wonderful & inspiring players — will cover Bluegrass, Blues, Cajun, Cape Breton, East European, Electric, Irish, Jazz, Jazz Manouche, Klezmer, Latin, Mexican, New Acoustic, New England, Old-Time Southern, Québécois, Scottish, Swedish, and Swing styles.
Registration is $144 for adults, $130 for seniors (65+), and students (up to 25) with discounts for additional family members.

Tuesday Night Practice Stream – cellist Emily Wright
This November, I’m going to be streaming an hour of my practice on Zoom one night a week! This will be my real, actual practice, with no commentary (with the exception of my own mutterings) and no interaction with viewers, to keep it squarely in the realm of practice and not a demonstration or performance.
For $50, you will get access to 5 live practice sessions, as well as PDFs of the material for reference.

Online Time Line Series
We will play, discuss & explore from your – the player’s point of view – a particular piece of music from the wide library of Unsung Heroes Cello Ensemble scores. These now range from Josquin and John Taverner (1490 – 1545), through to Tchaikovsky & Elgar and far into into the twentieth century.
Though there are some restrictions online, we can all play using the mute button, though not as a group. This is an exciting opportunity for players to have the chance to play as many parts as you wish as we play together.
You may want to bring a notebook too and I do send out further notes to help you continue the development after the class. I see this as a massive opportunity for us to do detailed work that really moves you on, because we have these apparent restrictions.
Your score is sent to you on booking your place and there are 15 places per class so we keep the lesson small, detailed and personal.

We will explore in varied ways, how our bow use can become increasingly natural to us – to become truly, an extension of your arm and hand. In going slowly and in detail, you will more truly find your own voice and feel able to express yourself more fully and authentically as a cellist & musician.

Online International Clara Schumann Competition
The International Clara Schumann Competition 2021 is an online music competition which aims to fully challenge the virtuosity and artistic excellence of performers for piano, strings, voice and chamber music of all nationalities and countries.
Through this online music competition, we hope to provide an opportunity for developing musicians worldwide to perform in a formal, challenging yet supportive atmosphere. The goal is to provide young musicians a forum to challenge themselves musically, and to share their music. Winners also have the opportunity to be featured in our online concert, and social media.

International Instrument-making Competition (Cello)

Musée de la musique/Philharmonie de Paris and Talents & Violon’celles
From 19 to 23 January 2022 at the Philharmonie de Paris
In January 2022, in partnership with the association Talents & Violon’celles, the Musée de la musique/ Philharmonie de Paris is organising an international instrument-making competition exclusively dedicated to the cello. Programmed at the same time as the 10th String Quartet Biennial, this event follows in the tradition of the many international instrument-making competitions that Paris has hosted.
Promoting contemporary excellence and developing future talents
Open to professionals as well as to students of instrument-making schools, the Talent Makers Instrument-making Competition is composed of two different parts organised in parallel:
Jury and Prizes
A jury composed of eminent musicians and personalities from the world of instrument-making will judge the craftsmanship of the participants as expressed by the instruments themselves and how they sound. Six prizes will be awarded to professionals, and three prizes will be awarded to students with one instrument joining the collection of facsimiles at the Musée de la musique. The finals and semi-finals will be organised as a real rendezvous with the public of the 10th String Quartet Biennial.

Queen Elisabeth Competition (Cello)
Five years after the huge success of the very first Queen Elisabeth Cello Competition, we will hold a new session for cellists. The second cello competition will take place from 9 May to 4 June 2022. This session was originally planned for May 2021, but is postponed for a year due to the postponement of the piano competition.
Cellists interested in participating, can now consult the requested repertoire, the entry conditions and read more information about the competition rounds in the rules of the 2022 cello session.

Application deadline : Wednesday 8 December 2021 12:00 (noon) GMT
Age limit : In order not to disadvantage the young musicians preparing for this second edition, the age limit for candidates is raised by one year. Hence, candidates are aged at least 18 and have not yet reached the age of 31 (instead of 30) on 31 December 2021 (i.e. they must be born after 31 December 1990 and before 1 January 2004).The applications will be done entirely online, through the ‘APPLY’ section of our website.

Gustav Mahler Prize Cello Competition 2022
The organizer
of the competition is the Gustav Mahler Institute Prague (Institut Gustava Mahlera Praha) in cooperation with the Gustav Mahler Philharmonic Jihlava (Filharmonie G. Mahlera Jihlava).The mission and goal of the competitionis to deepen the interest and motivation of young talented violoncellists to interpret mutual understanding, interpretative confrontation, inspiration and love for music. The personality of the genius conductor and musical composer Gustav Mahler, who lived in Jihlava for the first 15 years of his life and inspired and enriched so much, reminds him of his noble ideas about the mission of music and is a permanent inspiration source and model for young musicians from all over the world.

The Junior Cello Camerata
The Junior Cello Camerata offers intermediate cellists of all ages (including adult amateurs) masterclass lessons, or the opportunity to observe rather than perform solos, as well as a twenty-minute weekly technique class for all with cellos in hand. It is an online, international weekly gather taught by Wendy Warner, Jonathan Kramer, and Lisa Liske.

Let Natalie Haas teach you some tricks of the trade as well as some great melodies!
Natalie is one of the most sought after cellists playing traditional music today. She and Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser have toured as a duo for twenty years, wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound.
In this series she will teach some bowing techniques when accompanying melody players before moving on to chords and arranging, finishing with some melodies that sit well on the cello.
Although this series is aimed at the cellist, many of the skills and techniques will sit as comfortably on any string instrument.

DWB (Driving While Black)
Driving While Black
Dwb is the premiere filmed version of the opera by the same name Susan Kander and Roberta Gumbel. Presented by UrbanArias, now celebrating its 10th anniversary. UrbanArias is an opera company dedicated to producing short – 90 minutes or less – contemporary operas.
A solo chamber opera, dwb derives much of its power from the voice of soprano Karen Slack, starring as the various mothers. Slack, who has sung with the Metropolitan Opera and Washington National Opera, among other prestigious opera houses, moves easily from lyric to dramatic sounds and offers theatrical skills to boot.
A two-musician ensemble – composed of cellist Rosanna Butterfield and percussionist Eric Plewinski – is conducted by Robert Wood. Known as an innovator in opera, Wood founded UrbanArias in 2009.
Du’Bois A’keen directed and choreographed the film; Camry A’Keen was the creative director. Both have drawn on their extensive operatic, choreographic, and film backgrounds to bring elements of modern dance and music video production.
Tickets are $15 and allow unlimited viewing through October 31.
